CoreTrim FAQ

Common questions about CoreTrim source exports.

CoreTrim is a Final Cut Pro workflow extension. It is not a separate desktop app. Final Cut Pro must be installed on your Mac. These answers explain basic use, media safety, reports, and support.

Basic Usage

What does CoreTrim do?

CoreTrim runs inside Final Cut Pro. You drag a project from Final Cut Pro onto CoreTrim. CoreTrim finds the source files used by that project, exports new media, and creates a new project file that links to the exported media.

Does CoreTrim work directly on my Final Cut Pro Library?

No. CoreTrim reads project data from Final Cut Pro and writes a new project export. It does not change your active Library, Events, Projects, or timelines.

What is the basic workflow?

Open CoreTrim from Final Cut Pro. Drag a project onto CoreTrim. Choose Trimmed Sources or Untrimmed Sources. Review the source list. Export to a new folder. Then import the exported project back into Final Cut Pro.

Do I need to clear the grid between projects?

It can help. CoreTrim can export more than one project in a session, but clearing the list makes each project easier to check.

Source Export Modes

What is the difference between Trimmed Sources and Untrimmed Sources?

Trimmed Sources exports only the parts of each source used by the project, plus handles. Untrimmed Sources copies the full original source files used by the project. The exported project links to those new copies.

When should I choose Trimmed Sources?

Choose Trimmed Sources when you want a smaller export and do not need unused footage from the original source files.

When should I choose Untrimmed Sources?

Choose Untrimmed Sources when another editor or archive needs the complete source files. This keeps full source media available in the exported project.

Why are handles, multicam, and status menus disabled for Untrimmed Sources?

Untrimmed Sources copies whole files. Handles and multicam trim choices are not needed in this mode, so CoreTrim locks those controls.

Safety

Will CoreTrim modify or delete my original media?

No. CoreTrim does not modify, move, rename, rewrite, or delete your original media files.

Will CoreTrim change my original edit?

No. CoreTrim creates a new project export for you to import. Your original Final Cut Pro Library and project stay unchanged.

What happens if CoreTrim cannot safely trim a source?

CoreTrim chooses a safer option, usually Copy Original, when trimming is not safe. If a source cannot be copied or exported, CoreTrim tells you in the report.

What does Skip mean?

Skip means CoreTrim will not export that source. Clips that use skipped sources stay linked to the original media files. Do not delete those originals if you need the exported project to stay online.

Final Cut Pro

Is CoreTrim a standalone desktop app?

No. CoreTrim is a Final Cut Pro workflow extension. You need Final Cut Pro installed on your Mac to open and use it.

How do I get a project into CoreTrim?

Open CoreTrim from Final Cut Pro. Then drag the project directly from Final Cut Pro onto CoreTrim. You do not need to export an XML first.

How do I use the exported project?

Import the exported project back into Final Cut Pro. The imported project should link to the new media created by CoreTrim.

Does CoreTrim support multicam projects?

Yes. For trimmed exports, CoreTrim can process only the used multicam angles or all angles when needed.

Can Final Cut Pro still reject or crash on an imported project export?

Final Cut Pro controls the import step. If the exported project does not import correctly, keep the export folder and send a problem report with diagnostics.

Effects, Titles, Generators, and Plug-ins

Does CoreTrim copy effects, titles, generators, and transitions?

CoreTrim keeps the effect, title, generator, and transition references in the exported project when Final Cut Pro includes them in the project data. These items are not normal source media files. CoreTrim does not copy or trim them like camera clips, audio files, or still images.

Will third-party plug-ins still work after import?

Yes, if the same third-party plug-ins are installed and working in Final Cut Pro on the Mac that opens the exported project. CoreTrim can keep the plug-in reference. It cannot include a plug-in installer or make Final Cut Pro use a plug-in that is not installed.

What happens with Motion templates?

Some Final Cut Pro effects, titles, generators, and transitions are Motion templates. If Final Cut Pro gives CoreTrim a real file location for a Motion template, CoreTrim can copy that template into a Motion Template Resources folder inside the export. The exported project then points to that copy. If Final Cut Pro only gives CoreTrim the name of an installed template or plug-in, CoreTrim keeps the reference and reports that the item must be installed in Final Cut Pro.

Why does CoreTrim preserve some effects instead of copying them?

Many effects are installed inside Final Cut Pro, Motion, or a third-party plug-in package. They are not normal media files. Copying them could cause license problems, miss needed support files, or fail on another Mac. CoreTrim uses the safer choice: keep the project reference and tell you what may need to be installed in Final Cut Pro.

Will the exported project look exactly like the original?

It should match when Final Cut Pro can find the same effects, titles, generators, transitions, fonts, and plug-ins used by the original project. If something is missing on the Mac that imports the export, Final Cut Pro may show a missing effect, missing title, or a different look. Always import and check the exported project before deleting originals or sending the project as final.

Where can I see what CoreTrim did with effects and generators?

Read the export report. It lists Motion templates that CoreTrim copied, installed effects that CoreTrim kept as references, and warnings for items that may need attention. If an effect, title, generator, or transition does not look right after import, send the Diagnostics folder from that export with your support email.

Reports and Diagnostics

What is in the export report?

The report explains what CoreTrim did. It shows source decisions, skipped or copied sources, warnings, storage estimates, and the source list for the exported project.

Why should I keep the report?

Keep the report with the export. It helps you confirm which sources were trimmed, copied, skipped, or left linked to originals. It is also useful when sharing the project with another editor or contacting support.

What diagnostics does CoreTrim collect?

CoreTrim saves project data, the exported project file, settings, source decisions, export results, logs, and system information. This helps support find problems faster.

Problems and Support

What should I send when reporting a problem?

Use Help > Report a Problem in CoreTrim. Tell us what you expected, what happened, and attach the Diagnostics folder from the export that had the problem.

What makes a good bug report?

Include the source export mode, project name, Final Cut Pro version, and macOS version. Tell us if the problem happened before or after importing into Final Cut Pro. Include the names of any sources that look wrong.

Should I send media files?

Start with the Diagnostics folder. Do not send media unless support asks for it. If we need media, we will ask for the smallest file that shows the problem.

What should I do before deleting original media?

Import and check the exported project in Final Cut Pro. Make sure the project is online. Read the report. Make sure no needed sources were skipped or left linked to originals.
